Julie turned down a chance to speak at her county board meeting about her passion as a child advocate. Why? “I knew my ex-partner would be there and he discouraged my interest in this. And besides, what if nobody came?” Julio blew off accepting a well-deserved employee award. Why? “A lot of other people are better than me.”

Andrew spent his keynote speaking time in the banquet hall restroom. Why? “I left my speech notes back at the hotel.” Anya turned down a dinner date with an admired acquaintance. Why? “I wouldn’t know what to say, and my hands would be shaking.” Carla, who has an incredible sense of humor, opted out of a storytelling event. Why? “There were no notes allowed. I just knew I’d freeze without a cheat sheet.”

Each of these lovely people missed a wide open window of opportunity to shine, and to inspire others. It didn’t have to be that way. Everyone can learn the skills and have some subtle tricks that allow them to communicate without panic; to speak to an audience of 3, 30, or 300 with confidence, and a sense of enjoyment.

In this class, participants explore S.P.E.A.K., a five-part public speaking strategy designed by Ethel Lee-Miller to reduce anxiety and build public speaking skills. Components: Speech, Posture, Environment, Eye contact, a positive and open Attitude, and the habit of giving and receiving Kudos in the Kindest of ways.

• Adopt tools to reduce anxiety in each S.P.E.A.K. area to help you feel and look confident.

• Practice “fear fighters“ that work for you.

• Takeaways galore: tips to handle Q&A sessions, how to introduce a speaker; deal with unexpected technology glitches; speak off-the-cuff; win over a show-me audience; cover for no-show speakers; navigate one-chance only talks using humor and kindness; claim your voice, posture; use breath work effectively; use the stage; rehearsal ideas that produce super results.

• and lots more. The seeds are in all of us. S.P.E.A.K. can help them grow.
